The Del Rey, Another California Bungalow from Sears Modern Homes

The Sears Del Rey is another stylish and popular bungalow that hails from California. Sears Modern Homes, as well as other kit home manufacturers, used popular designs of the day to sell more kit homes. I’ve traced a few of them to their origins in California.

Although Sears Modern Home catalogs tell us that the Del Rey comes from Pasadena, California I have not found it, yet. I have found a few examples of the bungalow style in Pasadena but I haven’t found ties to those exact homes like I did the other California bungalows I have featured.

Sears first offered the Del Rey in 1920. Here is the catalog image from 1925.

The Sears Del Rey was first built in Pasadena, California where it was admired by travelers from all parts of the world.

No kidding! I guess that explains why so many offered this bungalow!

Those who know me know that I have likely tried very hard to find THAT exact bungalow in Pasadena. And, you are correct. I’ve nosed around a lot and I have thoroughly checked the obvious places like Del Rey Ave in Pasadena and Bungalow Heaven.

1183 Rose Ave Pasadena, California (1925) Del Rey ish

I found this Del Rey looking bungalow three blocks east of Del Rey Ave in Pasadena. Close. Not Sears. No cigar. Bummer.

1078 Mentor Ave Pasadena, California (1924) Del Rey ish

I found this Del Rey Looking bungalow in Bungalow Heaven in Pasadena. Once again, this is not THE Sears Del Rey nor is it “a” Sears Del Rey. Bummer.

I may not have found THE Sears Del Rey, yet, but thanks to Debbie and Ben George from the facebook group Sears Homes I do have one for show and tell!

Oct 15front corbels

Although this front entry has been altered it is still clearly identifiable as a Del Rey entrance hood and corbels. Those corbels are very distinctive and the first thing that I look at when identifying a possible Sears Del Rey. They are very different from all of the other corbels used in this same bungalow style! It’s a cause to pause and take a closer look. Photo is copyright of Debbie George

This number, 13065, is the number assigned to the Sears Del Rey. You may have noticed that in the catalog image at the top. Photo is copyright of Debbie George.
